Special Care Foundation for Companion Animals

Based in San Diego's North County, the Special Care Foundation for Companion Animals (SCFCA) is a non-profit organization created to provide philanthropic support for the development of promising treatments for cancer and other illnesses that may fall below the radar of other research facilities. It is located within the facilities of California Veterinary Specialists (CVS) and its Angel Care Cancer Center.

Established in 2003 by Dr. Gregory Ogilvie, a world-renowned oncologist at CVS,

the foundation's mission is to enhance and celebrate the human-animal bond and the quality of life of animals and people through compassionate care. The foundation seeks to empower others to work together to create, develop and explore groundbreaking treatment options that enhance the quality of life of the 'whole patient' through a combination of medical, surgical, radiological, nutritional, natural, physical and supportive options.

The foundation works to synergize academia, pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, government health organizations and national medical and veterinary practices to promote accelerated collaboration in translational research. The foundation is unique in that it shares CVS' state-of-the-art facilities, providing scientists the opportunity to rapidly transition research findings from the laboratory of academia, industry and biotechnology into an active applied setting.

Funding for the foundation is received from private and corporate sources whose donations, sometimes given in memory of an animal that has passed away, help to empower compassionate research and assist in the care of seriously ill animals on behalf of loved ones that could otherwise not afford such services. The foundation also aims to provide financial assistance to care for animals in the wake of natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods and fires.

To date, the foundation has raised more than $1.5 million. The foundation aims to launch several clinical trials and studies in the next few months, including one international study to be carried out in collaboration with a number of universities including the  School of Medicine at Universit Franois Rabelais in Tours France

Future goals of the foundation include the development of a research laboratory in alliance with CVS and its Angel Care Cancer Center for Animals that will allow scientists to study the molecular and cellular basis of disease and therapy in close quarters with the animals that will ultimately benefit. The foundation's Animal Care and Use Committee ensures that every aspect of funded animal care and therapy meets the highest ethical standards for treatment.
